My current laptop is a Thinkpad T43 which has been a dear companion for the past 4 years and is still going strong and been great for Rails development with Ubuntu installed on it. But it’s weight at 5lbs is heavy enough that I don’t carry my laptop around as much as I want to and I needed something lighter and smaller.

At first my obvious choice was the Thinkpad X series, which I might still end up getting depending on my experience with the NC10 and how it handles Ubuntu. But at $469 it costs less than a third so that was the deciding factor for me. I also ordered a 2GB stick which at $25 is well worth the upgrade. A lot of NC10 users have been upgrading their hard drives as well but for me 160GB is more than adequate especially since I use jungle disk to save most of my files and I’m a big believer in being digitally detached. I got this machine because it’s light and inexpensive and I want to be able to throw it around, take it to the beach etc. without worrying about it getting scratched or getting sand on it - I’m usually stressed about scratches and dents the first few days I get an expensive gadget. Since I don’t care about scratches and dents on the NC10 I don’t plan on buying a bag or other accessories for it. The little cloth sleeve of an excuse for a bag that comes with it suits me just fine.

My first impression was that it is very well built - it has no squeaks at all. The keyboard is surprisingly very tactile and usable my only gripe being that to get to the “End” button you have to hit the function key first. The power charger is very diminutive which makes the whole package look and feel very portable. It feels heavy but a lot of the weight is from the battery.

After starting the computer you go through the usual hoops XP makes you jump through but it annoyingly forces you to restart and then you’re presented with an obtuse “Recovery Solution III” screen where it asks about partitions which is the last thing you want to think about when you have a new computer and want to start playing it. I just want a clean no nonsense XP install with a dual boot no nonsense Ubuntu install. The default options are “Recovery - 6GB, Drive C - 68GB, Drive D - 75GB” which didn’t make any sense so I changed it to something that suits my needs better - “Recovery - 6GB, Drive C - 33GB, Drive D - 81GB, Ubuntu - 29GB”

The system feels zippy enough with the included 1GB but I upped it to 2GB. I can’t tell the difference but I’m sure that extra 1GB will kick in once I actually install some programs. I was also pleasantly surprised by the lack of junk bloatware programs (Lenovo + Thinkvantage is an obvious example) - the only program I ended up removing was McAfee - I paid for and prefer Symantec Client Firewall. The rocker mouse button is pretty much just for show - Samsung could just as easily have included a two button mouse and it would have worked exactly the same. But it looks nice.

The screen is vivid and bright compared to my T43. I thought the screen would be glossy from what I had read but it’s not! Definitely a big plus for anyone who wants to use this device a lot and in different lighting conditions. I’m not a fan of glossy screens and I was apprehensive about it so to see a bright matte screen with zero dead pixels was a very pleasant surprise.

The trackpad works just fine. I haven’t got the multi touch to work (I thought I remembered reading that it exists for this device) - I tried the usual pinching motions on web pages to make it zoom like the macs but that didn’t do anything. The SD card reader on front is convenient since I take a lot of pictures but it would have been nice if it didn’t stick out when inserted.

The wifi connection is stable and works well - no complaints. It works and it works well.

So far I’m very happy with the NC10 special edition. It’s rare that I buy a product that feels like it hits all the right notes but the NC10 SE does it and I know I will be using it a lot. I posted some pics at socialect.com/slogs/260

Outstanding with Radio Shack antenna, February 13, 2009

I was surprised to find the antenna still matters when using a converter box and my old rabbit ears weren’t delivering so I upgraded and it made all the difference. I was initially pleased that this converter box brought in such a wonderfully clear picture and added channels I didn’t even know existed, but was unhappy that instead of a fuzzy picture with a weak analog signal, a weak digital signal breaks up and is unwatchable. Wind seems to affect the signal more than stormy conditions and the signals I receive are generally stronger in the evening than in the daytime.

My rabbit ears are on a high bookcase and pretty much inaccessible so changing them for different channels or weather conditions is impractical. I decided to get a new antenna and went to Radio Shack for advice. The first unit I got was better, but still not great, so I returned it and came away with their more expensive ’space ship’ looking model. Like the first, it plugs into the wall as well as the converter box, but this one has a remote that lets you program it to different settings for different channels (a very easy process). That is ideal for my situation–not that I want another remote, but I don’t need to use it often and at least have the option if weather seems to be affecting reception. As it’s turned out, with this antenna, I now get even more stations and rarely does the picture break up so I couldn’t be happier.

The converter box itself is very easy to use and setup as others have said. I particularly like being able to get an on-screen program guide so I can select the desired program without having to advance through all the channels and the program description display is also helpful. I’d gotten used to those features with DirectTV and value them. I’d tried to add the local channels to that package at first, but couldn’t due to their inability to relocate my dish to access the necessary satellite. In the end, I’m happier with the converter box as it is much cheaper than the extra monthly charge to DirectTV and the features and picture are just as good. The converter box hooks to the cable box instead of the TV and passes through it. When the cable box is ‘on’ I get cable, when I turn it off, I see the local channels (and use the converter box remote). The TV stays on channel 3 all the time and no more bug races when I switch to local channels.

All in all, I’m extremely pleased with this box and all its features, which I guess some others don’t have. For example when I got the new antenna, I rescanned and it added six new stations, but I ended up deleting a couple of them due to lack of interest. That was also easy to do with the Zenith full featured remote. I’ve customized the picture sizes to fit my TV and have used the signal-strength feature a lot to determine the best settings for the new antenna. With all the extra channels I now get, including several new PBS stations with no commercials, I’m glad I didn’t go the cable route, as it doesn’t show half that many in its menu. The fancy new antenna cost $50, but it’s well worth it.

Update: The remote has a ’sleep’ button. When pressed and the unit is in sleep mode, it will turn itself off after a period of no use. Pressing the button again puts the unit back in manual mode, which means it will stay on until you turn it off manually with the power button. You can leave it on all the time, but I’m not sure yet the effect on the power bill. I mention this because others have complained that the unit ‘randomly’ turned itself off. Actually they had it in sleep mode, but apparently didn’t know it.

i don’t know how other converter boxes are supposed to work, so i have nothing to compare it to. but, i can say this…it took me less than ten minutes to get it all set up. that includes opening the box, reading the instructions, climbing behind the tv and hooking all the cables up correctly. there is some slight delay when you change the channels, but the pictures come in clear. i’ve only owned it for a month, so no problems or defects yet.

Looking through all of the DTV converter box choices, I chose this one because I had never heard of most of the other company names. I used a government coupon on this box so it only cost me 20 bucks which is a good deal. I hooked it up in my apartment, used my old rabbit ears instead of buying a new pair and it works great!! I like how it has a zoom button so you could change some(But not all) of a channel’s screen size. It has closed caption options, channel display of what’s playing and when, and a favorites menu. All in all I’m really enjoying this box!!

I’ve not encountered any product recently that works so simply and easily as this does. It’s a cinch to set up; for more complicated systems which also include DVD/VCR and stereo system, the people manning the 800 number are extremely helpful and patient. I needed their help — and we had it all done in under 10 minutes. I’m truly amazed by the high quality of the picture on my 27″ Sharp with only simple rabbit ears plus this box. I read most customer reviews of this and the others offered by BestBuy, CircuitCity and Target — this was the clear winner based on these. Now that I have it hooked up, it’s the clear winner for me. I say unhesitatingly, BUY IT. I’m buying a second one for bedroom TV before second coupon expires.

I see the digital conversion has now been delayed because Congress didn’t think YEARS was long enough for people to get the message. However…I connected my Tivax converter to a rabbit ears that only had ONE of the ears still connected. It’s on my sailboat in the SF Bay area. I had received broadcast channels previously sort of fuzzy and that’s about it. OMIGOD. I hooked up the Tivax in 2 minutes, fired it up and now have about 20 channels available, including high-def, and never realized my picture on my little 12″ boat TV could be so great. Wonderful product and people will be amazed by digital.

I have really researched the different models for several weeks before choosing this one. It was at the top of my list but was unable to find it, as was the Zenith DTT 901 and the Insignia. The Insignia was impossible to get, the zenith was hard to find from a reputable company which honored the warranty and defects that can occur in any model. When I noticed that the Tivax STB-T8 was overall superior to any other brand and model with its smart antenna connection (great option), analog pass though, power and channel buttons on front of device (a must just! for the just in case situation), does not get hot (don’t put on other machines like others have and surprisingly find any electrical device too hot), great remote that controls channels, volume, aspect ratio, signal check, awesome guide display that shows several hours ahead of programming, easy and quick connect and setup. It is well worth the money, I bought it through Amazon for 79.99 and with coupon only cost 39.99 (they are trustworthy and honor defected boxes and will replace it) and signed up for the Amazon prime free trial, upgraded from free 2 day to one day shipping for 3.99 (i placed order on Saturday and received it on Monday which was one business day as estimated). I am buying a second box and now that I have the Amazon prime free trial it is $30 cheaper (that’s awesome!). I decided to buy the RCA smart antenna passive multi directional version to see if i can pick up more channels than my current outdoor antenna. Will have to see if it works. Overall I am extremely pleased and satisfied with this device and highly recommend it to everyone wanting a converter box that is well worth paying for. Also, for those viewing reviews to decide what to get. Pay the extra 10 or 20 dollars (better than buying cheap, having it break down and then buy this one anyway) and choose a reputable seller, many had poor customer service and return policies and shipping costs that run up the price. I was dis-satisfied very much with MANY of the companies that i googled when searching for coupon eligible boxes, definitely read the reviews, if they can offer you a too good to be true offer, it probably comes with a cost. Amazon gave me an ease of mind knowing i was buying from them directly and their policy on returns and defects.

Works as advertised. It appears to be solidly constructed and well thought out. Good features, especially the signal strength meter. I also like the button on the remote that changes the aspect ratio of the display — very convenient.

I was surprised to see how many digital channels I could get — I went from one good analog channel to 60 digital channels after installation. For the antenna, all you will probably need is a regular UHF antenna (the round loop, not the rabbit ears). I have always used a powered antenna, but did not need to buy a new antenna. The digital signal is quite directional, so the signal strength meter helps a lot in finding the right angle to place the antenna at.

My first converter box was a Zenith DTT900. It died exactly 92 days after purchase which was 2 days after the full warranty expired - very displeased. Instead of paying Zenith the $35 they wanted to fix it, I ordered a 2nd coupon and bought the Tivax. Wow, the color is brighter and the picture is noticeably more sharp than the Zenith on the same TV. My whole family noticed it right away. Almost made me glad the Zenith died - almost. I’m very pleased with the Tivax. The only thing the Zenith has over the Tivax is that the Zenith remote can be programmed to turn on the TV so you don’t need 2 remotes to watch TV. Of course, that doesn’t help much if the box is dead.

I must add that although I love Amazon and their service, this box is overpriced here. It’s available for less elsewhere.

This netbook is great. i just got it on Friday, and I’m so pleased with it.
It’s quick, and the screen is a great size where I can view videos, websites etc. very well. For the price you are getting a great deal and I also heard that Acer Aspire One is the top selling mini notebook. So I suggest if you you are looking for a real deal computer in a mini size that can go everywhere with you, there is no other choice.

Acer made a nice mini-notebook into a better one. The screen is larger and just as bright. The keyboard is still great (for a small one). No weirdly placed right shift key placement (Asus, Lenovo, etc). The mousepad buttons are below the touchpad not along side (yeah). It is now easy to increase ram or replace the drive without entirely dismantling the unit and voiding the warranty. I have no complaints. I loved the first one, this one fixes all the criticisms of the first one. Nothing major just refinement. Someone is listening to its customers and it is Acer.

You won’t find a better laptop for under $1000, January 28, 2009

I’m 23 and have been using PCs for about 15 years.

In terms of the competition for this laptop, I’ve had my hands on everything from Sonys to Dells to Toshibas to HPs, everything. This computer puts every one of them to shame in literally every category.

The speed is just amazing. Out of the box it rates a 4.5 out of 6 by Vista (most similarly prices models rate a 3). It can be overclocked from 2.0ghz to 2.4ghz, yet the thing never heats up. I compared it directly with a more expensive Dell. I ran a particular high demand program. The Dell could not run it. This computer ran 4 instances of it. That means this thing is at least 4 times as capable as a more expensive, bigger name computer. That’s what happens when you put an AMD processor on an MSI motherboard against an Intel on some generic Chinese motherboard, the Intel will always fail in comparison.

The touch pad actually works, it’s fast, and it doesn’t misinterpret anything. Out of the dozens of touch pads I’ve used since their invention, this is the only one I can’t complain about.

It’s the lightest 15.4″ laptop I’ve come across, yet feels so solid that I know it’s more durable than any of the alternatives. Even has some aluminum construction which isn’t just aesthetic, but actually aids in cooling. Probably one of the reasons this comp never overheats.

It doesn’t come loaded with a bunch of useless programs that try and steal your money (AOL etc.). It comes with what you need, Vista, and drivers that work.

I have literally found no downside to this computer except that it isn’t free and that it took me 15 years to find a computer I have no complaints about.

I researched these MSI’s before purchasing. I didn’t even know where to buy them until I looked up the MSI website and looked at their products and then went to find the where to buy links. I have always used Dell for our desk top and laptops. We have had 3 laptops and several desk tops throughout the years (all Dell). I was looking for a new Dell laptop and stumbled upon these by total accident. I am so glad I did. A laptop like this thru Dell would have cost at LEAST $1200 or more. Easily. I got this one for $699!!! It beats any Dell I have had previously and would def recommend this, and have already, to everyone! If you are looking for a kick butt laptop this is IT!
